What I’ve noticed about comment threads in gawker (Some sections more prevalent in others) where there are people who feel like they have to combat some kind of topical issue that someone else has expressed. I’ve myself responded several times to others for reasons that basically involve disagreement. Most of the time, I can see the outcome in front of me and it’s usually pointless. It’s ALWAYS depressing.

If there are other sentient life out there, and if they have tapped our internet traffic and looked at our online presence, they’re going to see how we represent our points and views on the internet, they’re going to observe the value that we place on the understanding of our own language, and they’re going to find that we are a prideful, arrogant, ignorant group of beings with far more emotional stake in gaining the upper hand in an argument instead of finding out the actual facts.

There are exceptions of course, the funny and expressive writers and commenters, the ones who absorb new facts and update their views, the practical commenters behind the scenes trying to make it better, and most of the viewers who are simply here to get info, keep entertained, and move on.

You, the exceptions, the ones who can civilly disagree, the ones who can live and let live, the ones who aren’t afraid of absorbing new information, I salute you. As for the rest of you assholes, fuck off and stay off the internet. Thanks.

Yeah, but you’re wrong. You and your opinions have no place on Oppo. Screw you, you ignorant jackass.

...carry on

I couldn’t have said it any better! I might add there are also the assholes who will take the opposite stance no matter what the subject is, even if they agree with you. They start an argument just to be a troll. They can also just rot in hell.

Somewhere there is a hell just for trolls and it’s just a sensory deprivation chamber.

A sensory deprivation chamber, but with a quote from their least favorite political candidate as the only thing in the room.

If you ever want to get your blood pressure spiked join Quattroworld and go to the off-topic forum. Largest land of trolls on the web, mention anything political and you get everyone all pissed off. First they might tell you to go to their political forum but then they will got into a venomous tongue lashing. I left the entire site after a decade just because of the constant group of trolls grinding away at my nerves. You could hardly discuss any subject without encountering at least an asshole or two. I like it here, not like a typical forum and people here seem somewhat sane.

Sorry to see Doug leave Jalopnik, guess I’ve have to read his wisdom elsewhere now. I checked out his stuff before I ever started my blog here.

I hate Gawker for the fact that it’s literally just an echo chamber in which any differing opinions than the bandwagon are angrily shot down like you just started WWIII.

Like, there was a Jez article about Caitlyn Jenner the other day. I mentioned how horrible she is (it doesn’t take too much research to learn this fact) and I literally had to spend the next 24+ hours fighting me telling me she’s oh so great of a human being.

Gawker commenters don’t like using facts. They fight with their emotions...and for some odd reason, many people seem to value emotions as facts.

If I go to yet another car forum that is just trolling and arguments put together, I think my body will rebel immediately by dramatically shooting my internal organs out from every orifice it finds.

NSXprime is actually relatively peaceful, all things considered. It may simply be because there are less people there.

The entire internet seems to exist as a steroid-fed competitor for some giant straw man who is apparently threatening everyone's personal rights. He just wants to kick some ass, so fuck you! Doubly so on Gawker, where the rule is "be one of the first 20 non-dissenting commenters or else."

The problem is more prevalent than you might think. What I find is that almost everyone (online or no) fights with their emotions. People vote with their emotions. People argue with schools and teachers about their kids grades with their emotions. Teachers give grades with their emotions.

It’s not that emotions are a bad thing, it’s as you say, people seem to value emotions as facts. #MakeAmericaUseFactsAgain

A group of the VW/Audi guys spun off onto some private server forums with just a few hundred on each. Somehow I got an invite to each , its an honor. I’m try to use my moderator privileges with some restraint. Much less drama there so not much is needed.

It’s not an internet phenomenon, it’s a top to bottom societal problem. Appeals to emotion work better than stating plain facts, because nobody has to think about emotions, they just have to feel them. Start pulling out facts and suddenly everybody is thinking and checking and comparing. Since the leaders of society know this, they build their rhetoric around emotions, and discourage critical thinking. That trickles down from the tops of government, churches, schools, etc. to the common person on the street. Nobody gives a shit about making sense, because everybody around them doesn’t give a shit either.

They’re not exactly limiting themselves to the internet. You don’t have that one friend (let’s call him ‘Steve’) who gets everyone in the crew kicked out for loudly calling the bartender the N word? Or that one guy you work with that won’t stop using his phone when he drives people to the workplace outing? That one dipshit who won’t stop punching you in the arm while he makes bad jokes and waits for you to laugh with him?

It seems even worse nowadays though, as now you can easily look up facts...and thanks to a certain candidate, it’s now perfectly socially acceptable to never ever fact check things.

It used to be easy-ish to put these people into place with some good research, now they just get to go “nah nah nah I don’t believe you!” and people will agree with them.

No, emotions aren’t bad at all...just I wish we didn’t live in a society where you can be actively ignorant...and literally all sides of this year’s election are showing it in spades! :(

But that’s part of a larger problem too. For instance journalists, and wannabe journalists (*looks at twitter*) repeat all sorts of stories without checking facts. And it’s been going on for years.

It is interesting how we’ve become. It’s nearly parallel to Idiocracy. Open stupidity is almost encouraged these days.

Like, I can’t believe people are still trying to say Planned Parenthood sells baby parts when the “sting” video that started it was proven time and time again to be fake...and the people responsible are facing charges too! We’re being purposely stupid.

Opening a can of worms here, but I think this is mostly the influence of religion. Where having “faith” is more important than having proof, and anything that makes you question your faith is just a test...
